UCSF is celebrating the opening of the UCSF Health Bayfront Medical Building, which brings new adult urgent care, primary care, same-day surgery and specialty care to the community in a single setting.

The building on UCSF’s Mission Bay campus will house more than 130 physicians, bringing together primary and secondary clinical care for roughly 131,000 patient visits per year, about a third of which will be for new patients.

With six new primary care doctors, the expanded capacity will open approximately 20,000 new primary care patient visits per year. It also enables a spectrum of services that connect to primary and urgent care, including 14 operating rooms for outpatient surgery, 15 kinds of specialty care, a radiological imaging suite, a physical/occupational therapy gym, a retail and compounding pharmacy, and a laboratory for blood draws. This all-in-one care makes for a more convenient, patient-centered experience.

Bayfront will also house San Francisco’s largest ambulatory surgery center. The outpatient surgery wing includes state-of-the-art technology, allowing for procedures that don’t require an overnight stay. Four of the 14 outpatient operating rooms at Bayfront are designated for ophthalmologic care – offering cataract and cornea surgery, laser vision correction and glaucoma surgery – which will integrate seamlessly with clinical appointments at Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision next door.

The urgent care will have capacity for up to 16 patients at a time, providing a space for timely care of important but non-emergent issues such as ankle sprains, sore throats and ear pain.

The five-story, all-electric, 181,000-square-foot building is designed with wood trim and light-filled spaces, as well as paintings and murals by local artists that brighten hallways and exam rooms, providing a healing environment for patients.

The building is accessible by public transportation and is attached to a new nine-floor parking garage. Bayfront Medical Building features comfortable indoor and outdoor seating and sculpture, lactation rooms and a café.
