UK company develops keyboards to help reduce HAI risk

Keyboards have flat design with no raised or recessed surfaces and monitors and ability of monitor own cleaning status

Medigenic — in partnership with the United Kingdom's National Health Service — has designed an infection control keyboard which helps monitor its own cleaning status to safeguard patients and staff.

The Medigenic Essential keyboard’s flat design wipes clean with healthcare-grade disinfectants. There are no raised keys to wipe around; no covers requiring replacement or disposal; no need to disconnect, submerge and dry, according to a Keyboard Specialists Ltd release.

The Essential has no raised or recessed surfaces bacteria cannot hide underneath a crevice. The keyboard complies with the most recent UK legislation; HTM01-05 compliant passed by the CQC Audits and cleaner, conforms to the Safer Care guidelines and is approved by the Department of Health, the press release said.

Medigenic's Compliance keyboard is a patented infection control keyboard which monitors its own cleaning status to safeguard both patient and staff. This is done through a flashing light and alarm on the keyboard, which sounds when the keyboard needs cleaning. This alarm is preset by the manufacturer at twelve hours but is user definable. The Compliance keyboard also has a single keystroke feature that disables it during the cleaning process.

Medigenic also manufactures a scroll mouse, which is fully approved by the Department of Health. The scroll mouse is easy to clean with hospital grade antibacterial wipes and fully sealed to IP65 standard.

KBS is a UK supplier of medical, industrial and educational keyboards and IT accessories.
