UV LEDs Show Promise in Killing Coronavirus: Researchers

Researchers investigated the disinfection efficiency of UV-LED irradiation at different wavelengths or frequencies

Managers in institutional and commercial facilities remain under mounting pressure to implement strategies that will make workspaces safer and healthier for occupants and visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve these goals, managers have turned to a range of technologies designed to minimize and eliminate the spread of the coronavirus. Now, research is supporting the implementation of one of these technologies.

Ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LED) can effectively, quickly and cost-efficiently kill the group of coronaviruses, according to researchers. The study carried out at Tel Aviv University investigated the disinfection efficiency of UV-LED irradiation at different wavelengths or frequencies on a virus from the family of coronaviruses, according to Health Europa.

The researchers point out that to disinfect a bus, train, sports hall or plane by chemical spraying, workers need physical manpower, and in order for the spraying to be effective, it must have time to act on the surface. Disinfection systems based on LED bulbs, however, can be installed in a ventilation system and air conditioner and sterilize the air sucked in and emitted into the room.

Eventually, as the science develops, researchers say, the industry will be able to make the necessary adjustments and install the bulbs in robotic systems or air conditioning, vacuum and water systems, enabling them to efficiently disinfect large surfaces and spaces.
