White paper examines accountable design in healthcare industry

A recently published white paper examines whether the design industry should also be held accountable for health outcomes under The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

By Healthcare Facilities Today

A recent white paper published by the McGraw-Hill Research Foundation explores the idea of how healthcare design impacts patient care, and thus, whether the design industry should also be held accountable for health outcomes under The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

"Accountable Design for Accountable Care" considers case studies of design research in hospital inpatient units. Topics covered include unit configurations and layouts, decentralized nursing stations and family-centered care. The emphasis is on how using evidence-based design affects health outcomes and overall satisfaction of both patients and care providers.

The paper makes an argument for integrating more research into facility design and widespread adoption of pre-occupancy evaluations.
