Wisconsin nursing home took aggressive steps to halt coronavirus

Autumn Oaks Assisted Living in Slinger once faced four active cases of coronavirus

In Slinger, Wis., Autumn Oaks Assisted Living once faced four active cases of coronavirus, the staff took aggressive measures to test, separate and protect residents, according to an article on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The steps appear to have stopped the spread for now.

At least 40 percent of all Wisconsin residents who've died with COVID-19 were living in longterm care facilities, according to May 8 data from the state Department of Health Services.

In mid-March, a week before statewide orders, Autumn Oaks started restricting visitors. There were enough masks for staff to change them daily and for residents to have them as needed.

When residents were at risk, Autumn Oaks had them quarantined to their rooms, assigned specific staff members to them to reduce spread and immediately had them tested. Staff caring for those residents used the more protective N95 masks.
