e2v - the original manufacturer of the Green Top Magnetron

Designed, developed and manufactured in the UK for almost 60 years, e2v is the original manufacturer of the Green Top Magnetron, a core component in radiotherapy systems. Since 1957, e2v has worked closely with customers to enable the development of state-of-the-art platforms that deliver consistent treatment to cancer patients around the world.

Every 0.25 seconds, someone is treated for cancer using e2v technology, and over 90% of the world’s radiotherapy machines contain an e2v manufactured product. Ongoing innovation at e2v has resulted in the development of new magnetrons and high voltage switching technology. e2v’s magnetrons deliver peak microwave power ranging from 1MW to 7MW to drive the linear accelerators that produce the high-energy x-rays that destroy cancer cells.

More recently, e2v has introduced the 3MW Blue Top Magnetron offering higher power capabilities and an internal structure designed to enhance operational performance during the delivery of radiotherapy treatment.

As the manufacturer of the original Green Top and Blue Top Magnetrons, e2v has the technical expertise to fully support its customers in selecting the optimum magnetron, accessories, thyratron and solid state modulators for their specific application.

Ewan Livingstone, President RF Power at e2v, comments, “I’m particularly proud of e2v’s long heritage in radiotherapy. We have been providing magnetrons and thyratrons into the market for almost 60 years. Our long standing customer partnerships, innovation and expertise are reasons why e2v components are intrinsic in over 90% of radiotherapy machines across the world.”
