Designing safer restrooms

Take into account spatial considerations and maintenance strategies to minimize falls and transmission of infections

Features to consider include touchless fixtures, solid surfaces and natural materials.

Studies have shown that many patient fall when trying to access the bathrooms, so it’s important to promote easy restroom access, the article said.

Restrooms should be free of sharp edges, protruding fixtures and tight corners. And there should also be a short and clear path from the bed to the bathroom. More hospitals are incorporating sliding doors or double door entryways that create easily accessible openings.
