Digiland LED lighting helps Telford's PRH save on energy bills in UK

The new LED lights have been installed in one of the corridors in the hospital entrance and are part of ongoing plans to make the building more energy efficient.

Beth Beasley, sales and marketing assistant manager at Telford-based Digiland LED Lighting which installed the lights, said the Princess Royal was not alone in wanting to cut its energy bills.

She said: “A recent survey by The Carbon Trust found that energy-efficient lighting was top of the shopping list for the majority of businesses – some 77 per cent had already invested in new lighting in the past year.

“In the current financial climate it makes sense that public buildings like hospitals and council offices do the same. We are talking to the Princess Royal Hospital about installing more LED lights in the future if they are happy with the savings from this initial trial.

“You are typically looking at savings of up to 50 per cent, and the savings get better the more lights you convert to LED, so it would be great to install more at the hospital. For example, lots of councils up and down the country are now replacing street lights and car park lighting with new LED lights because the savings are so significant.”

John Ellis-Tipton, the Trust’s estates manager for environment and risk, said: “As an environmentally-responsible organization, we are keen to explore as many ways as we can to reduce our carbon footprint, and LED lights are one of the options that we are currently trialling.

“On average, LED lights use only around 20 per cent of the energy used by a traditional filament or halogen lamp, without any reduction in light output. They also last a lot longer and therefore reduce the number of lamps that we have to replace and dispose of.

“We have installed LED lights in the main entrance area at the Princess Royal Hospital and, though it is still early days, they look impressive and we are pleased with the results so far.”

Digiland LED Lighting is a newly-established arm of Digigroup, based in Stafford Park in Telford, owned by former Samsung Electronics European CS managing director, Jaydee Park.

Mr Park has vowed to make Digiland LED Lighting one of the biggest LED lighting companies in the UK within the next three years.

He said: “LED lighting is a growing market because people are now realizing the massive savings that can be made simply by replacing their existing lights with new LED technology. But not only do organizations make financial savings, they also help to cut carbon which is a major global priority nowadays.”
