Researchers urge hospitals to prepare for a cyberattack against the U.S. power grid


Researchers are urging healthcare facilties to do more to prepare for the effects of a cyberattack against the U.S. power grid, according to an article on the Fierce Healthcare website.

Automation within utility systems has created new cybersecurity vulnerabilities, raising the potential for large power outages.

“Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort,” according to a report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

The report refers to backup generators at hospitals and calls on state regulators to perform more systematic testing.
