2017 top medical tech hazards listed

ECRI Institute names potential infection hazards


ECRI Institute has named device failures caused by cleaning products and practices one of its Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2017, according to an article on the Health Facilities Maintenance website.

Infection risks with heater-cooler devices used in cardiothoracic surgery is No. 5 on the list.

"Technology safety can often be overlooked when hospital leaders are dealing with so many other issues," David Jamison, executive director, health devices group, ECRI Institute, said in the article.

Other hazards new to the 2017 list include inadequate cleaning of complex reusable instruments.
