In October, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) published a new guide to help architects more accurately predict future energy consumption in current building projects.

“An Architect’s Guide to Integrating Energy Modeling in the Design Process,” created by a committee of architects, sustainability experts and government building science officials, offers best practices for evaluating the energy performance of commercial buildings.

The guide touches on the different types of energy modeling, including tools and software available for it, as well as how to discuss modeling with other build team members and clients.

Such a tool could be particularly useful in the healthcare sector as hospitals spend more than $10 billion annually on energy, according to a November study by The Commonwealth Fund.
