Active shooter prevention strategies

Healthcare organizations can increase the chances that a planned attack will be averted

Healthcare organizations can develop prevention strategies that will increase the chances that a planned attack will be averted, according to an article on the Campus Safety website.

It is unwise to spend more resources on responding to attacks than trying to prevent them, the article said.

For instance, multi-disciplinary threat evaluation and management teams have demonstrated success in preventing many planned attacks since the technique was first used to stop a planned school shooting in Bibb County, Ga., more than 25 years ago.

Visual weapons screening has also been used to successfully prevent a number of planned shootings. Visual weapons screening involves training personnel how to look for and recognize a variety of specific physical behaviors often exhibited by persons who are carrying a concealed weapon.
