A Detroit healthcare facility is currently trying to explain how 11 years of sterile processing challenges went unaddressed, and that situation is just the tip of the iceberg, according to an article on the Becker's Infection Control & Clinical Quality website.

The state of sterile instrument reprocessing in America is broken, the article said. There are at least five quality indicators that could signal a problem. They include:

• No required sterile processing certification

• Inadequate staffing models

• Limited capital equipment/technology investment
