Areas outside nursing home resident rooms key to infection control

Residents have frequent contact with staff and the environment outside of their rooms


A recent study has shown that residents in nursing homes or long-term care facilities have frequent contact with staff and the environment outside of their rooms, according to an article on the Healio website.

This observation suggests new targets for infection prevention and control measures in these facilities, according to the researchers report in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

According to the study, resident-environment contact occurred least often in the lounge/TV room, with 6.3 contacts per hour.

Areas such as the lounge/TV area or dining hall are not typically included in infection control policies in nursing homes, the study said.
