The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare facilities and their information technology (IT) departments. From telehealth and remote patient monitoring to remote work strategies and increased cyberattacks, IT has had to revisit and reprioritize strategies and activities on an almost daily basis. 

Through it all, health systems have continued the digital transformations they already had embarked on and redoubled their efforts to accelerate them in earnest in response to this public health emergency. The hope is that the galvanizing technology innovations that have emerged will be foundational in 2021 and beyond. Healthcare IT News highlighted key IT developments of 2020.

For example, consider the overall impact of COVID-19 on digital healthcare: "The post-COVID world is likely to be remembered as the time when the care of other medical interactions, like the provision of primary care or the management of noncommunicable diseases, shifted to digital modalities as the default rather than the exception," said HIMSS Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Charles Alessi.
