A family member of the first Zika-related death in the U.S. has contracted the virus, but apparently not by a mosquito bite or through sexual transmission, according to an article on the Becker's Hospital Review website.
"The new case in Utah is a surprise, showing that we still have more to learn about Zika," said Erin Staples. a CDC medical epidemiologist.
The CDC is interviewing and testing family members and healthcare workers who had contact with the deceased.
The deceased patient was treated at University of Utah Health Care in Salt Lake City. Hospital officials say they are "confident that the appropriate protective measures were employed by all staff."
