Canadian Healthcare Facilities Seeing Resistance To In-Hospital Masking

Altercations witnessed when visitors are asked to wear mask in Alberta facility

Alberta Health Services (AHS) healthcare facilities have deployed screening staff take visitors through a set of questions and provide a fresh face mask., but the effort isn’t always received well, according to an article on the CBC website.

While most people comply with the masking requirement,  Dr. Michael Chatenay said he sees the screening staff take abuse daily.

One man injured a security guard during an altercation that started when he refused to wear a mask while was visiting his wife at the hospital, Chatenay said in the article.

However, AHS said that no patient will be denied service because they cannot or will not wear a mask.

The issue isn’t reserved to visitors. Infection preventionists need to constantly monitor and educate their fellow healthcare workers, too, according to an Infection Control Today article.

Because there are some healthcare workers from different cultures, with varying different belief systems, she said, some of them still believe COVID is a farce or  it doesn't really exist.
