Canadian hospital security guards facing increased violence due to meth crisis

Union invites health minister to sit in an emergency room to see dangerous situations

The president of a Manitoba union representing hospital security officers has invited the health minister to sit in an emergency room to see the dangerous situations fueled by methamphetamine, according to an article on the Times-Colonist website.

Michelle Gawronsky, president of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union, said it's not uncommon for officers to be kicked, punched or spit on.

Gawronsky said officers need a more elevated legal status to allow them to address violent situations with more authority.

Health Minister Cameron Friesen said the province is looking for ways to maintain safety in healthcare facilities.
