The new Cherokee Indian Hospital (CIH) will be built in Cherokee, N.C. The 150,000-square-foot healthcare facility will serve an estimated 15,000 tribe members across the western part of the state.
CIH will focus on disease control, primary care and other services already in high demand, according to an article on the Healthcare Construction + Operations website.
The new complex will double the size and capacity of the existing tribal hospital, which was built in the early 1980s. The project will also bring departments that are currently working in onsite trailers into the main facility, which will feature décor made by local artists.
The $75 million facility will be owned and operated by the Cherokee tribe, which assumed control of community healthcare in 2002.
