Children’s hospital cuts viral infections with UV-C tech

A UV system is used in addition to standard cleaning protocols on the toddler unit


A new study explored how St. Mary’s Hospital for Children used UV-C technology to lower rates of viral infection among pediatric patients by 44 percent over a 12-month period, according to an article on the Becker's Clinical Leadership and Infection Control website.

The study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, deployed the UV tech at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside, N.Y.

Many of St. Mary’s patients have weakened immune systems due to existing illness. From February 2016 to January 2017, St. Mary’s included a UV system is used in addition to standard cleaning protocols on the toddler unit.

The system was used two to three times per week in patient rooms and bathrooms and three times per week in common areas.
