Choosing the right disinfecting products

Most facilities clean and disinfect with quaternary ammonium products

Most healthcare facilities clean and disinfect with quaternary ammonium products, which come ready to use, concentrated or in pop-up wipes, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

If the product must be diluted, it’s important to follow the instructions carefully. Using too much or too little can affect the ability of the solution to kill germs.

Spray bottles are not a good way to apply germicides, the article said. Sprays may not cover evenly, and they expose the user to aerosolized chemicals. An eight-ounce peri-bottle with a pop-top is a good alternative.

With pop-up wipes, be sure to check the label for the required wet contact time. The higher the alcohol content, the shorter the wet time with most products.
