Corewell Health to Close Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital

The 60-year-old hospital will officially be shut down in October.

Corewell Health will close its Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital in October. The 60-year-old hospital has become outdated, which has made delivering care challenging. There has been a steady decline in utilization of Kelsey Hospital over the past decade, with few hospital admissions, as neighboring hospitals’ capabilities grew. All hospital team members will receive help finding another role with Corewell Health.

In June, the $12 million, 15,800 square foot, Corewell Health Lakeview Care Center opened. It is just a few minutes away from the hospital. The center’s walk-in clinic is open every day, including weekends. Services include Lakeview Family Medicine, Lakeview Walk-in Clinic, outpatient rehabilitation and lab services.

As always, in an emergency, Lakeview area residents should continue to call 911. Critical patients seen in the Kelsey emergency department have been transferred for higher levels of care for nearly a decade, most to other nearby Corewell Health hospitals.

New to the community in 1962, the Lakeview-based hospital was challenged with years of declining patient volumes and aging infrastructure. More than half the patients seen in the emergency room could have been treated at a walk-in clinic, where care is typically more affordable.

Corewell Health has multiple plans to commemorate the legacy of the Kelsey hospital and further demonstrate its continued commitment to the Lakeview community.
