Decentralized nursing stations can come with unintended consequences, according to an article on the Becker's Hospital Review website.

Nursing stations were moved to lessen walking distances for nurses and allow for more time at the bedside.

A research team from Kansas University's Institute for Health + Wellness in Lawrence reviewed the 2014 renovation of Jefferson, Mo.-based SSM St. Mary's Hospital's orthopedic unit.

According to the study, patient scores improved on most patient care-related questions after the renovation, except for nurses' response to patient calls.
