Designing privacy and safety into healthcare facilities

Privacy controls must be balanced with the ability for discreet or full observation by healthcare professionals


When designing a healthcare facility, architects must design areas that meet privacy controls, but are also still safe and allow for discreet or full observation by health care personnel, according to an article on the Healthcare Construction + Operations website.

It is important to safeguard a patient’s physical privacy during exams, consultations and hospital stays. 

As such, it is important that privacy solutions in exam rooms and other patient-sensitive areas are easily adjustable to balance ongoing staff monitoring with auditory and visual privacy, the article said.

Fire safety is an especially critical patient consideration. Designing patient spaces for optimal fire safety is essential but can prove challenging in areas requiring adjustable patient privacy.
