Electronic health records can be risky if not done right

Partial or incorrect implementation may be emerging problems for physicians

By Healthcare Facilities Today

In his recent blog on the Physicians Practice website, Jerry Brunken, president and chairman of the board of The MGIS Companies, Inc., says there are rumblings in the insurance industry that suggest a wakeup call on electronic health records may be on the way.

He lists a few areas where the emerging risk is expected.

1. Partial implementation.

2. Errors in implementation.

3. Not knowing who is in control

4. Everything you put in the EHR becomes discoverable evidence

5. Lack of a plan for data security and breaches.

6. Lack of systems to back up and protect the data.

Brunken says EHRs will increase efficiency, improve care coordination, and provide many other benefitsbut physicians must recognize fully how they work, train staff on HIPAA and privacy guidelines often, and do a stellar job of implementation.
