Engineer shares tips for creating corporate facility maintenance programs

CHICAGO – What is the average lifespan of the concrete sidewalk outside your office? Like the components of a well-oiled machine, each facility's building components have a recommended replacement life cycle in years.

In Al Tierney’s new book, Retail Facilities Maintenance – The Circle of Management, he advocates the importance of facility predictive and preventive maintenance programs. Sharing the cliff notes from this engineer’s long and effective maintenance career, this book aims to educate businesses on the importance of building upkeep and the management needed for positive results.

“This tool can help businesses improve their own maintenance program,” say Tierney. “Retail Facilities Maintenance puts forth 'the circle of management' needed to provide a quality corporate retail facilities maintenance program.”

Beginning his career in engineering, Tierney soon began the first facilities maintenance program at Grainger and after 19+ years there, he was hired at Bridgestone to improve their facilities maintenance program. Working 30 years for two national corporations by developing predictive and preventive maintenance programs, Tierney now is in a self-made consulting business advocating the importance of proper facilities maintenance management.

“A properly maintained facility is one of the best investments a company can make,” says Tierney. “The book covers a wide range of corporate facilities maintenance management concepts for all the participants in the process - upper management, the operations department, the facilities maintenance staff and the vendors who perform the improvements.”
