HAI reduction program developed to support environmental services

Hospital improves infection control by educating housekeeping

When a 76-bed rural hospital embarked on a new infection control program, they focused on the support staff as well as the clinical, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.

When the environment services staff members were asked about basic knowledge of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), most said, “I really don’t know about them, I’m just a housekeeper.”

These interviews inspired an environment services annual education program, the article said.

The infection prevention department developed a PowerPoint presentation based on the recommendations of CDC and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee. The presentation included information on MDROs, common HAI-related organisms' kill time for disinfectants, as well as the surface life of organisms.
