Hawaii hospital boosts security after dangerous patient escapes to California

'Pathological predator' managed to fly to California before being caught

Hawaii State Hospital is reviewing its security policies after a 'pathological predator' managed to leave the hosputal and fly to California before being caught, according to an article on The New York Times website.

Additional fencing is being purchased, workers are conducting more unannounced searches of patient areas and visitation policies are under review.

Randall Saito, whom prosecutors described as a pathological predator, had been held for more than 35 years after being acquitted of murder by reason of insanity.

“The incident was a result of a major breakdown in our Hawaii State Hospital staff protocols, procedures and guidelines,” Janice Okubo, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health, which runs the hospital, said in an email.
