Hazard vulnerability assessment is a valuable design tool

HVAs are one method of measuring the probability of certain hazards

Hazard vulnerability assessments (HVAs) are one method of measuring the probability of certain hazards, according to an article on the Hospital Build & Infrastructure website.

There are four categories of hazards that an HVA reviews and assesses the potential for occurring: natural, technological, human and hazardous materials.

The California Hospital Association made a template for this assessment that is available for public use. An excel spreadsheet can be downloaded.

The spreadsheet walks users through potential hazards for each of the categories and assign a risk factor.

A second set of risk factors that describe an organization’s preparedness are also rated.

Once each of the potential events are rated for probability and severity, a relative threat metric of 0-100 percent is produced by the template.
