Healthcare facilities harmony with natural surroundings recognized

Vermont Psychiatric Hospital and Mayo Health Clinic recognized by 11th Design & Health World Congress for design excellence

Harmony with natural surroundings led the Vermont Psychiatric Hospital in  Berlin, Vt., and the Mayo Health Clinic in Cannon Falls, Minn., to be honored by the 11th Design & Health World Congress with the mental health project award and the interior design project award, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

The new 25-bed, $23 million Vermont hospital is a replacement for a facility that was damaged by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

Locally harvested stone and hardwoods were used throughout the facility. The interior design concept  was designed to create a soothing and restorative environment

The Minnesota took a similar approach to its $28 million replacement hospital.

The facility is located on a sloped hillside. Brick was chosen to give it a sense of permanence and stature, the article said. The exterior features earth-tone bricks at the entry facade with red brick marking the central core.
