Hospital investigators, CDC disagree over source of deadly mold

Mold responsible for the deaths of seven patients at University of Pittsburgh hospitals

Questions regarding the source of the mold responsible for the deaths of seven patients at University of Pittsburgh hospitals remain, according to an article on the Outpatient Surgery website.

Some fingers are pointing to the hospital's ventilation system, others at its linen service.

A report commissioned by the hospital documented evidence of mold both at the hospitals and at Paris Cleaners, in Dubois, Pa.

But an earlier investigation by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control concluded that the hospital's ventilation system was more likely the culprit, and a Pennsylvania Department of Health spokeswoman later asserted that the investigation didn't "support the conclusion that infections resulted from exposure to linens,"  the article said.
