Challenged by a patient volume that exceeded the current capacity, Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg in Bethlehem, Pa. redesigned its emergency room to accommodate the greater numbers and transform operations to allow for a rapid assessment and evaluation of emergency patients. According to an article on the Healthcare Design magazine website, the new rapid assessment unit was designed to improve safety and quality of care by minimizing the waiting room experience and creating a faster connection between providers and patients.
