A facility manager (FM) must keep both short- and long-term views. The FM team must be concerned not only with serving hospital staff, patients and guests, but also with the executives. 

Facilities managers typically find themselves between worlds. One minute they are presenting capital budget requests to the chief financial officer, and the next minute they are in a basement examining a busted boiler, the article said.

In either case, there are specific skills and experience that anyone can add that will open up opportunities for advancement in the FM field, including:

• Being familiar with finance and executive terms

• Getting credentials both in the FM field and in business

• Getting comfortable with emerging technologies 

• Thinking organizationally
