Indiana hospital disarms its police officers

IU Health La Porte's security force was disarmed when Community Health Systems officially took ownership of 80 percent of the facility

Indiana University Health La Porte's security force was disarmed when Community Health Systems officially took ownership of 80 percent of the facility, according to an article on the Herald Argus website.

La Porte County Sheriff John Boyd called it “the worst decision” by CHS to relieve hospital officers of their firearms and Tasers.

The hospital police department is just over a year old.

“We made an announcement to our police force this week regarding changes we will be making in our security practices. These plans continue to develop and we will communicate directly with the individuals dedicated to keeping our campuses safe for all patients, visitors, employees and physicians. We have extensive security measures for a wide range of emergency situations but do not publicly disclose the details of these precautions in the interest of safety. We work closely with our police officers, who are constantly engaged in enhancing security practices and will be helping us build upon our security program continually, ” IU Health La Porte said in a statement.
