Justifying price of whole-room disinfection robot

Whole-room disinfection is not only a matter of patient safety, but also one of effective cost containment

When justifying the price of whole-room disinfection robot, its important to point out that whole-room disinfection is not only a matter of patient safety, but also one of effective cost containment, according to an article on the Outpatient Surgery website.

A single disinfection robot can run more than $100,000, but hospital-acquired infections cost U.S. hospitals in excess of $45 billion per year, according to CDC estimates.

"It's a straightforward calculation. Infections are very expensive," said Joel Sklar, MD, chief medical officer at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif.

There are the direct costs associated with prolonged patient stays, the indirect costs of harming a facility's reputation and the potential negative impact reportable infections can have on value-based reimbursements, Sklar said in the article.
