Kansas hospital upgrades emergency department

The $6.2 million expansion and renovation project more than doubled the space of the department

The newly renovated emergency department at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kan., took the space from 6,000 square feet to 16,000, allowing the department to grow from a 10-bed treatment area to 19 beds, according to an article on the Hutchinson News website.

“Be assured this enhancement is not the final chapter in enhancements planned for Hutchinson Regional Medical Center,” said Jim Gilliland, chairman of the hospital foundation board. “Other capital improvements are on the drawing boards to better serve our patients’ needs going forward.”

The upgrade included two new major trauma rooms, four patient fast-track units, an updated diagnostic imaging suite, new entrances, new accommodations for EMS crews, two private patient rooms, a sexual assault exam room, an expanded visitor and guest lounge and 14 private treatment rooms.

Officials said no major upgrades have been done to the department since it was originally built in 1975.
