Maine hospital recognized for recycling program

York Hospital has volunteer 'Green Team' whose works to conserve the environment by ensuring that sustainability becomes an integral component of daily operations

Maine's York Hospital has a volunteer “Green Team” who works to conserve the environment by ensuring that sustainability becomes an integral component of daily operations, according to an article on the Sea Coast Online website.

Recently, ecomaine, a waste-management company, presented York Hospital with a "eco-Excellence 2015 Award,’" honoring the hospital for its recycling efforts over the past year.

In 2014 more than 40 tons of waste was diverted out of the solid waste stream that would have been incinerated or remained in area landfills, saving over $4,000 in disposal fees.

“The upcoming renovation of our Birthing and Family Care Center has provided a great opportunity to improve the living environment and comfort of our patients,” said Chief Operating Officer Steve Pelletier. “With upgrades that include a continuous cavity wall thermal barrier system, energy efficient window, doors and roofing system, along with a heating system that will utilize high efficiency hot water boilers, the construction exceeds minimum energy code requirements."
