Medical Center Seeks to Recover from Cyberattack

Officials work to restore access to sites used by the public and say it will be some time before systems are fully restored

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to throw major challenges in the path of facility managers in hospitals, and no challenge has been tougher to address than cybersecurity. The issue is exacerbated by the persistence of cybercriminals seeking to take advantage of managers and organizations involved in the many challenges they face daily.

At the University of Vermont Medical Center, officials continue to recover from a cyber attack late last month that crippled access to electronic records at the Burlington hospital, according to the Associated Press. Hospital officials recently said it had successfully restored access to its main electronic records system.

The restoration includes inpatient and ambulatory sites at the UVM Medical Center and ambulatory clinics at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Porter Medical Center in Middlebury and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York.

But the hospital’s information technology experts are still working to restore access to sites used by the public. The hospital says it will be some time before the systems are fully restored.
