The Mercy Memorial Hospital System in Monroe, Mich., enacted an armed-intruder scenario as part of a security drill recently, according to an article on the Monroe News website.
The Monroe Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Emergency Management Division and Michigan State Police along with the sheriff’s Special Response Team took part in the drill run by the hospital to evaluate its staff’s response to an active shooter situation.
The scenario began as a woman ran out of the building shouting for help. Within minutes, officials were on the scene attending to the wounded and working to free the hostages.
A hospital spokesperson said this was the first time the hospital used an office area for the drills. The hospital takes part in a variety of drills regularly as part of its accreditation.
“We have to keep our patients, visitors and employees safe,” said Jackie Swearingen, marketing and public relations director for MMHS. "The drill was good for us because it shows us the resources we have on hand and what else we might need in the future."
