N.M. healthcare facility's recycling program cuts 200 tons of waste in a year

The San Juan Regional Medical Center has been working on reducing its carbon footprint since 2007

The San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M., has cut 200 tons of waste per year and a total savings of $2 million with its recycling program, according to an article on the Farmington Daily Times website.

To reach its waste-reduction goals, the hospital established a Green Team in 2007. The group of hospital employees meets quarterly to discuss waste-reduction ideas.

The hospital has equipped each department with several recycling/reprocessing bins to collect different types of waste. Bins are also placed in public areas of the hospital.

The hospital also delivers composted food waste to the New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center, 10 miles south of Farmington.
