N.Y. adult care facilities reviewing security after robbery

Emergency room at the Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport robbed by armed man

After an armed robbery at the Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, N.Y., local healthcare facilities, including adult care centers and nursing homes, are looking at their security measures, according to an article on the Lockport Journal website.

An armed man went into the emergency department at the hospital demanding drugs. The man threatened hospital staff, got a supply of pharmaceuticals and fled the premises. The hospital and a sizable portion of the city’s east end were put into lockdown.

Lockport Presbyterian Home implemented its “active shooter” procedure during lockdown, which meant no residents were allowed to leave the facility and all 14 doors of its four buildings were connected to make one large building.

The balance between security and residents’ rights is delicate, the article said. The facility does not house medications on the premises except for those that are prescribed to particular residents; and even then, the medications are stored in a locked box, in a locked medication room.
