N.Y. clinic informed by hospitality design to create

David H. Koch Center includes patient-centered design choices


David H. Koch Center — the NewYork-Presbyterian ambulatory care facility in Manhattan  — was informed by hospitality design to create 'human' feeling, according to an article on the Metropolis website.

The healthcare industry is awakening to the power of thoughtful design, with studies showing that design decisions can affect patient recovery times and staff efficiency, the article said.

The Koch facility keeps clinical functions on the inside of the floor plan and patient circulation on the outside, near sunlight. 

“The question was, How do you bring this volume to life?” Henry Cobb of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, said in the article. “How do you make it feel human?”
