NYC hospital security officers don't feel prepared for active shooter situation

The more than 800 law enforcement officers carry batons, handcuffs, radios and flashlights


Police officers who work for some of the busiest hospitals around New York City say they don't have the proper training or equipment needed or an active shooter incident, according to an article on the PIX11 website.

The more than 800 law enforcement officers carry batons, handcuffs, radios and flashlights while working in the city's 11 hospitals in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx, but since the deadly shooting inside of Bronx Lebanon Hospital in 2017, they've been fighting for more gear and training, the article said.

Earlier this year, 13 hospitals on Long Island armed their security guards, provided them with active-shooter drills, and added optical barriers after an uptick of violence at Northwell Hospitals.

A spokesperson for NYC Health and Hospitals said the current training that's given to their officers is in line with New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services peace officer curriculum
