Henderson Hospital in Henderson, Nev., is the first hospital in the U.S. to purchase and install operating light fixtures that continuously disinfect the environment, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.
Henderson installed the light fixtures in their operating rooms and recovering spaces, helping to proactively kill harmful bacteria.
The fixtures use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to generate visible white light that also contains a narrow spectrum of indigo colored light. The indigo color uses a wavelength of 405 nanometers, which automatically and continuously disinfects the environment.
The Valley Health System plans to install the light fixtures in additional facilities in the Las Vegas area over the next few months.
