New York Hospital System Receives $17 Million for Upgrades

Renovations on NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island will begin in summer 2022

By Chris Miller, Assistant Editor, Facility Market

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island received $17 million to renovate and expand its primary and preventive care services for the South Brooklyn community. Construction is projected to begin when the present emergency department in the hospital’s primary building transfers to the new inpatient hospital next summer.

The investment will help to innovate wellness and outpatient primary care clinics to improve the health of state residents with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other common health conditions. The focus is on outpatient care, prevention and chronic disease management. The funding will support the renovation of 26,000 square feet of ambulatory care space. This includes over 50 exam rooms. Brand new equipment along with a renovated radiology suite is also being added.

A 2019 community needs analysis revealed that patients were visiting NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island for routine well and preventative care, hypertension, diabetes mellitus complications, along with other chronic health care needs. The upcoming renovations in the current hospital building will help expand care so that more patients will have the ability to address all their non-emergent and diagnostic imaging health care needs. Between 2018 and the healthcare system had over 718,000 ambulatory care visits. During that same period, the hospital saw over 72,000 outpatient diagnostic radiology visits.
