Nine ways to cut hospital costs

Many are facilities related and involve 'green' measures

When it comes to the cost side of a hospital's financial equation, you can either find better ways to spend  money, or see where costs and expenses can be trimmed, according to an article on the Becker's Hospital Review website.

Hospital leaders offer nine ways hospitals and health systems can cut costs to become a more financially stable organization. Many are facilities related and involve "green" thinking.

1. Rework shipping strategies. 

2. Implement a wellness and disease management program for employees. 

3. Improve landscaping irrigation. 

4. Remove and reduce lighting. 

5. Revamp the chilled water system. 

6. Install solar panels in sunny areas. 

7. Replace inefficient sinks, toilets and urinals. 

8. Look closely into new recycling initiatives. 

9. Use timers to heat coffeepot water only during business hours.
