PITTSBURGH  – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has introduced SOLARBAN(R) z75 glass, a solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glass with a proven track record of international success, in North America. The glass features a neutral, cool-gray tint and offers architects and building owners an attractive combination of visible light transmittance (VLT), solar control and glare control characteristics. 

In a standard 1-inch insulating glass unit, Solarban z75 glass has VLT of 48 percent and a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.24, resulting in an exceptional light-to-solar-gain (LSG) ratio of 2.00. Solarban z75 glass also has exterior reflectance of just 9 percent, which, together with its neutral, cool-gray aesthetic, enables it to harmonize well with other building materials and color-neutral, low-e glasses such as Solarban z50, Solarban 67 and Solarban R100 glasses.

Miner, PPG director of construction, flat glass, said Solarban z75 glass is engineered to meet architects’ demand for a performance-enhanced low-e coated glass with a similar aesthetic to steel blue-gray Solarban z50 glass, enabling building designs to meet increasingly rigorous energy-efficiency standards.

“Solarban z50 glass has been popular with North American architects and building owners for years because of its unique aesthetic and superior energy performance,” he said. “Solarban z75 glass represents the next step in the evolution of this product family because it can help glazing systems in the U.S., Canada and Mexico more effectively meet new LEED(R) v4 targets for energy efficiency as well as California’s new Title 24 requirements.”

Miner added that PPG-designed Solarban z75 and Solarban z50 glasses provide a range of solar control performance, enabling architects to specify the right product for a particular climate zone or building code need. “With its 0.24 SHGC, Solarban z75 glass is ideal for warmer climate zones with high air-conditioning demands and cooling-dominated costs,” he explained. “Solarban z50 glass, with SHGC of 0.31, is a great choice in climate zones with more balanced heating and cooling seasons.”

Solarban z75 and Solarban z50 glasses have interior reflectance of less than 10 percent, enabling them to provide building occupants with clear, natural outdoor views. Both products are certified at the silver level by the CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFIED(CM) program.
