A new patch was invented to repair hospital beds, prevent spread of infection and save healthcare facilities from prematurely replacing equipment, according to an article on the Calgary Herald website.
The inventors recently won the 2015 Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award given annually to Canadians who are improving the lives of others worldwide.
The patch is being used in ambulatory care, acute care, long-term care facilities and seniors’ centers in Canada, the U.S, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and South Africa, while being tested in three other European countries.
Health Canada estimates hospital-acquired infections are responsible for as many as 12,000 deaths and $1 billion in healthcare costs annually.
