Patients R Us: Former Toy Store To Become Outpatient Center

Penn State Health transforming big-box store near Harrisburg

An empty Toys R Us store near Harrisburg, Pa., will be an outpatient center for Penn State Health, according to an article on the Lancaster Online website.

Penn State Health also has a hospital under construction in East Hempfield Township, due to open in 2022.

A second outpatient center is going into the north side of Lancaster.

The former toy store will be a 47,000-square-foot outpatient center. The second outpatient site initially will consist of 30,000 square feet of medical office space that will house a variety of medical and surgical specialties and outpatient services, such as imaging and lab testing.

More healthcare providers have moved to shopping malls to be  closer to potential patients, according to a Fierce Healthcare article. Malls are often located near major highways and other transportation, which appeals to providers. The rise in outpatient clinics at these locations also is competition for retail health clinics, according to the article.
