The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee offers guidelines and guidance statements that can help healthcare facilities directly reduce the risk for transmission of HAIs such as multidrug-resistant organisms and other emergent pathogens, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.
They include the use of antimicrobials, such as antibacterial soaps and environmental surface disinfectants.
To prevent bacteria from spreading, the CDC recommends improving hand hygiene; using gloves, gowns and dedicated equipment for patients who have resistant bacteria; and knowing about antibiotic-resistant HAI outbreaks.
Maintaining a sanitary environment through effective cleaning and disinfection practices, sanitizing hands often can help reduce the potential risk for transmitting many emergent pathogens.
